It’s that time of year – holidays are around the corner, and what comes with that? Delicious food, rest, relaxation, and yup… weight gain! One way to prepare for the holiday bulge is to create an action plan for getting back on the trolley once the new year comes, and what better way to do that is by committing to new year’s resolutions?
To that end, here are 10 New Year’s Resolution ideas for weight loss.

1- Calorie Counting
One sure-fire way to lose weight that works almost 100% of the time if you do it correctly is counting calories.
Though it’s not “fun” by any means and can even feel quite cumbersome, once you get the hang of it it’s not all that bad!

2- Track Your Daily Steps
The second weight loss new year’s resolution you might want to make is to track your daily steps. If you don’t have one already, there are great deals on step counters around this time of year.

3- Try Intermittent Fasting
The third weight loss new year’s resolution you might want to try is the ever-so-popular intermittent fasting. If you don’t know what that is, it’s basically a way of eating where you restrict your calorie intake by only eating within a certain window of time. Usually only between 12pm and 8pm.

4- Commit To Healthier Substitutes
Next, a great new year’s resolution you might consider is to start substituting some of your favorite foods for healthier alternatives.
5- Increase Your Water Intake
Yet another great health & fitness new year’s resolution is to up your water intake – by a lot! Water not only hydrates your body which is essential to keeping extra pounds at bay. But it also has an added benefit of keeping you fuller for longer.
Much of the time when we think we’re hungry, we’re actually thirsty.
Make a habit of reaching for the water bottle before reaching for the fork, and you just might find yourself coming up with a new year’s resolution you can stick to for the long haul.
6- Find A New Active Hobby
One of the best promises you can make to yourself at the beginning of a new year is to find an active hobby that you enjoy.
Exercising on a treadmill or lifting weights can be boring and dry. But there’s no rule that says it has to be that way.
Consider taking up a new sport, going ice skating, or making it a group effort. Make it fun and extra pounds won’t stand a chance!
7- Try Dry January
Holidays have a way of being extra boozy if you’re not careful. That’s why “Dry January” – a time when people swear off all alcohol for the entire month of January – is a thing.
Alcohol has so many calories, and often leads to poor dietary choices as well.
Consider cutting back on the booze for the new year by giving Dry January a shot! (no pun intended)
8- Get Competitive
Friendly competition is a great way to shed holiday pounds during the new year if you’re not that motivated to do it all by yourself.
Something simple as to see who can lose 10 pounds the fastest once January 1st hits is a great way to jump into a new year!
Bonus points if you and your friends have the same fitness tracker – like a Fitbit, where you can compete with steps per day or per week!
9- Create A Home-Based Workout Plan
The next promise you can make to yourself in the new year is to put together an in-home workout plan that you can do without having to physically go to the gym. A great idea is to browse YouTube for instructional videos that can help you reach your goals quickly and easily.
One of my personal faves is Yoga With Adriene’s yoga channel, for example. You can do so much in just 10 minutes, and every little bit counts because doing something is better than nothing every time, right?
10- Try A New 30-Day Challenge
Finally, you might like to try a 30-Day Challenge to get you in the right frame of mind for the new year. The beginning of a new month is always a fresh and exciting clean slate to start a challenge.
It’s especially so during a new year and new month!
Just doing that little bit is enough to keep you motivated at least a little. And also keep the extra pounds at bay.
