Sober Dates Can Be Lots Of Fun

If you’re anything like I was, date night is often synonymous with drinks of some kind.

Dinner and a movie? Incomplete without drinks.

Netflix and chill? A bottle of wine (usually something harder).

Bowling? Drank.

Concert? Pour up.

Literally, every date night occasion either in or out of the home was fueled by alcohol. If you find it challenging to wrap your head around the idea of dating without drinking, trust me – I feel your pain.

Lucky for you, it is totally possible to enjoy sober date nights!

It will be a little different from what you’re used to at first if you’ve never done it before.

Sober Date Night Preparation

sober date nights

Before we dig into the activities you can try, I want to make one point clear.

You need to prepare! If you expect to be successful at this – especially in the early sober days – I want to drill it into your head that you need to avoid putting yourself in the same situations as before.

If you want different, BE different.

That means plan to totally switch things up. Step outside of that little comfortable box.

Do not go to a bar or to the same restaurants or dancing at the same liquor-filled club.

That’s setting yourself up for failure. BE DIFFERENT.

The most obvious reason doing and being different works is that it keeps you from falling into old patterns, but it also works because it stimulates you.

You’ll have fun exploring something new and unique, whereas of course if you stay in the same surroundings as always, knowing what to expect the whole time, you’ll get bored and be more likely to drink.

I’ll step off my soapbox now and get to the ideas.

But not before I say one more time… BE DIFFERENT!

Sober Date Night Idea #1: Keep It Sweet

Whether you’re in a committed relationship or just testing the waters, keeping it sweet by going for special dessert can be a cute, fun way to spend some sober quality time together.

Bonus points: chocolate is an aphrodisiac. Getting your sugar crush on with your sugar crush at a new place, then taking a walk around, hand-in-hand is a great way to bond and build intimacy and closeness.

Sober Date Night Idea #2: Take A Class

Once again, whether you’re in a long-term relationship or totally new, taking a class together will stimulate the brain, help you create new memories and keep you on your toes. Bonus points if neither of you have ever done the activity before.

A few ideas:

-Cooking

-Dancing

-Clay/Pottery Making

-Terrarium and Garden-making

-Martial Arts

Sober Date Night Idea #3: Get Active

If you and your boo enjoy moving around (or even if you don’t think you do), another good way to enjoy time together sans-booze is to get moving.

Engaging in a thrilling, energy-burning activity such as laser tag, paintball, surfing, skating or even scuba diving will definitely keep you from drinking and stimulate the brain and the body.

Check Groupon in your area for special deals.

Sober Date Night Idea #4: Go Outside

Depending on where you live and the weather, why not enjoy nature? For a day date, load up a super-cute basket like this one of healthy, yummy snackies for a picnic at the park.

At night, grab some blankets and go star-gazing.

Other ideas include hiking a beautiful trail or if you live near water, try fishing or some sort of boat tour.

Anything that keeps the two of you engaged and gives you something to talk about will work wonders.

Sober Date Night Idea #5: Treat It Like The First Time

This is for those in a committed relationship.

Why not recreate your first date?

Remember what you wore, how you styled your hair, where you went, what you ate (minus the drinks)! And re-create that entire experience!

It might sound a little weird, but I promise it’s really fun and will connect the two of you like no other.

The best part is seeing who remembers what, and how well!

It will make for some really fun, happy banter, which is always good. Being playful keeps you young and free-feeling, and it’s good to jog your memory in such a fashion, too!

In conclusion, early sobriety comes with lots of challenges – navigating romantic relationships is no exception.

Whether you’re on date #1 or have been married for a decade, if you expect to be successful in kicking booze to the curb, you’re going to have to make some serious changes to how you spend your special quality time.

Perhaps over time, you’ll be able to go back to some of your old activities, booze-free.

But in the beginning, you might need to make sweeping changes to keep you from the temptation of falling back into your old patterns.

Who knows, though? Maybe you’ll have so much fun trying new things that you’ll find you actually prefer novelty over familiarity.

The only way you’ll know is if you try.

So, book that class, try out that new cafe, or go hiking on that new trail you’ve always wanted to try.

It just might be the key to unlocking a new level of intimacy and fun in your relationship, as well as make your path to recovery that much clearer.
